Psyche Abandoned

Jacques-Louis David’s Psyche Abandoned (1795) is a rare glimpse into vulnerability and emotional isolation rendered through neoclassical technique. Psyche, nude and seated alone by the sea, evokes themes of loss, purity, and introspection after her fateful separation from Cupid. Her expression—fragile yet composed—conveys a sense of innocence touched by heartbreak.

David breaks from his usual heroic grandeur here, instead opting for raw emotion and soft, painterly textures. The cool palette of sky and sea contrasts with the warmth of her body, amplifying the emotional tension and sense of abandonment. This intimate masterpiece is one of David’s most psychologically complex works.

This reproduction is meticulously hand-painted using premium oil paints and high-grade canvas by professional artists trained in classical techniques. Ideal for collectors of neoclassical art, romantic themes, or feminine portraiture.

• Hanging your painting:

Oil painting reproductions are dispatched un-stretched and un-framed. They come with plenty of excess canvas so they can be easily framed or stretched.

The most common way is to stretch your painting over wooden stretcher bars. The images below illustrate two ways this could be done with blank canvas sides or with painted sides.

You can either get your painting stretched or framed at a local framing store or stretch it yourself easily and cheaply by doing it yourself following our online guide.
